It’s All In The Spin

Here’s the headline and lede of a story on KVIA:

El Paso makes top 125 list of best places to live in U.S.

El Paso was ranked 105 on the 2018 list of best places to live in the U.S., according to U.S. News and World Report.

The report listed 125 places and ranked Austin, TX number one. The report cited how people are drawn to the Texas capital’s music, outdoor spaces and cultural institutions.

And here’s the an excerpt from the source material, an article on the website U.S. News:

U.S. News analyzed the 125 most populous metro areas to find the best places to live. To make the top of the list, a place had to have good value, be a desirable place to live, have a strong job market and a high quality of life.

So, of the 125 most populous metro areas in the United States, El Paso came in 105th.

A more accurate headline might have been “There are worse places to live in the U.S.”

Comparing El Paso to other cities in the U.S. is meaningless. El Paso shines in areas in which other communities don’t even move the needle. Instead of trying to play catch up, we should highlight the game we’re already winning.

  1. Yep, it’s all in the spin. It. depends on which list is reviewed and who conducted the survey. I saw a list that shows Las Cruces as 39 and El Paso as 225 on a list of 330 cities.(2018)

So when the media or some worthless politician tells you we are the safest or best anything. Check all the lists because they will choose the one that sheds a more favorable light on El Paso. Totally ignoring a low rated position if the city makes the list at all.

  2. I agree with you. I cringed when I saw how low El Paso was…and because I live in San Antonio, was proud of our spot, but thought WE should be #1. (just kidding). Austin has many amenities but housing prices are through the roof, traffic is a nightmare and if you want to raise a family is not exactly family friendly. If you’re single and went to date 2 different girls every night, then that is the place for you. In fact, Austin was voted as the Worst City that Guys treat Women….however, that is another story. El Paso will always be my home but it seems stuck in the past and the more things change, the more they stay the same: El Paso Chihuahuas, ,Paul Foster, his wife, Woody Hunt, etc…..
