Do you need a passport to come back from Mexico?

“I never bring my passport. What are they going to do? Deport you? You’re already over here.”

“Have you ever seen it on the news? ‘It’s day 47, and so-and-so has been stranded in Juarez without a passport.'”
What if you lost your passport in Juarez? Would they deport you?
The worst that could happen is secondary inspection. Okay, the worst that could happen is intense anal and vaginal probing in the name of national security. But wait, that lady had a passport, and she settled with the University Medical Center for more than a million dollars.
