If we want El Paso to gain any ground in the public’s perception, we all have to be pulling in the same direction. We can’t have the tourism board telling everyone it’s all good, while the news reports that cops are shooting mentally disturbed prisoners in the sally port of the El Paso County Jail.
It’s more than bad press. It’s shitty. It’s not who we want to be.
Additionally, it’s bad press.
The cure isn’t controlling the press. The cure is being who we want people to think we are.
Potential emigres don’t keep a whiteboard tally of the pros and cons of every location, but El Paso’s on the bubble anyway. It doesn’t take more than a milligram of bad news to tip the scales.
Maybe it will help keep mentally disturbed tourists away. That’s all good.
I’m afraid that without mentally disturbed tourists we won’t have any tourists at all.
Probably true.
