I remember not that long ago – 70s & 80s- when Venezuela was the richest country in South America. What happened? And what should the US do? Intervene and we’re the Ugly American. Let it go on and there is starvation, chaos and who can blame them for migrating elsewhere?
The lesson I see in this is a no-win choice for the US to not let countries in our hemisphere commit national suicide, like Venezuela. But that means intervention and forever wars. There is noting on earth more dangerous than a failed state that becomes petri dish for all manner of crime and terrorism, including exporting it to their neighbors. No-win.
