Some of my homies have been telling me that legal is right around the corner. From the Houston Chronicle Online:
In a surprise move that supporters hailed as a historic victory, the Texas House Criminal Jurisprudence Committee approved legislation Wednesday that would make it legal to buy and sell marijuana in the state.
According to this guest column in the Texas Tribune, support came from surprising quarters: avowed Christian State Representative David Simpson, a Republican from Longview. He wrote
As a Christian, I recognize the innate goodness of everything God made and humanity’s charge to be stewards of the same.
In fact, it’s for this reason that I am especially cautious when it comes to laws banning plants. I don’t believe that when God made marijuana, he made a mistake that government needs to fix.
. . .
The time has come for a thoughtful discussion of the prudence of the prohibition approach to drug abuse, the impact of prohibition enforcement to constitutionally protected liberties, and the responsibilities that individuals must take for their own actions.
So spark it up, right?
Not so fast. According to the chron.com article
The proposal, which would make Texas the fifth state in America to OK pot for recreational purposes, has virtually no chance of clearing any other hurdles on the path to becoming law in this year’s legislative session.
But don’t you think it’s just a matter of time? I mean, God willing.
