According to data collected for this paper on patterns of drinking in the American Journal of Public Health, El Paso County is in eighth place among Texas counties in the Men’s Division of the Binge Drinking category for 2012, the latest year covered in the paper.
El Paso scored a 33.7 rating for Age Standardized Prevalence of Binge Drinking, defined as “five drinks or more for men on a single occasion at least once during the past month.”
33.7 is not too shabby, but we’re going to have to step it up if we want to catch Loving County at 43.5 or Dimmit County at 41.1. We should be able to catch Bee and Brookes Counties, which scored 33.9 and 34.1, respectively, and Willacy at 34.2 with just a little more dedication. Then Jim Hogg County at 34.8 is in our reach. Lavaca county, at 37.1, is still a stretch, but I know we can do it. I believe in you.
El Paso’s heavy binge drinking does explain some things. Like our slogan, It’s All (hiccup) Good.
