It’s day eight of a ten-day tour. I just woke up in a renovated suite in a castle in County Carlow in Ireland. The rug covers warped floorboards that were hewn by hand centuries ago. Ireland is a country with a durable history. In El Paso, the oldest buildings are made of mud bricks that, once exposed, erode under the elements, if they’re not bulldozed in the name of progress.
