I know reason and common sense have no place in local government, but I found out some things that I thought you should know.
There was a presidential election last month. Maybe you heard about it. And the voters elected this guy who used to be on teevee. I think it was that show Gomer Pyle USMC, or maybe Gilligan’s Island, or the one with the talking horse.
Anyhow, this guy who got elected, he’s strictly against sending jobs to Mexico. I mean he’s against maquilas.
When our local leaders want to talk about how good the local economy is, they always talk about the maquilas. Like when the maquilas are humming, the El Paso economy is humming right along with them.
Anyhow, this guy Gilligan (or maybe he was the captain) he’s against maquilas. He’s not president yet. That black guy’s still president till Christmas, I think. But when Gilligan gets to be president, he might be bad for the maquilas. He might be bad for the whole Mexican economy. And that would be bad for the El Paso economy.
Maybe. He might not really be president. It might just be some publicity stunt, I don’t know.
Anyhow, I’m thinking now might not be the best time to borrow $180 million to build that arena. Till we figure out what’s going to happen after Gilligan gets to be president. I mean, the whole local economy might go right down the shitter, you know? And then what?
Who’s going to pay for that arena?
