Here’s a post from the Anunciation House blog recalling an earlier case of sudden death at the hands of peace officers.
There was the young man of color; the officer ratcheting up the tension in a difficult situation; the use of lethal force out of all proportion to the victim’s actions; and afterwards, the way that those magic words, “self-defense,” dissolved any attempt to scrutinize the shooter’s actions, to hold him accountable.
It’s titled Who will defend us from the self-defenders? and you have to admit, that’s a good question.
We were complacent when we needed to step up. We need to step up now, before it’s too late.
