In an ongoing effort to “inform” the voters, someone posting on Facebook as EPISD Board Member Susie Byrd claimed that, if the bond measure passes, taxpayers in the El Paso Independent School District will pay “the third highest tax rate in the region, behind Ysleta and Canutillo.”
While technically true, the Ysleta Independent School District allows a twenty percent per homestead deduction, effectively reducing the effective tax rate paid by homeowners (by twenty percent). So while the tax rate is indeed higher for commercial property owners and landlords, for homeowners claiming the homestead exemption, the tax rate is considerably less.
I’m glad I could help clear up that “information.”
