No More Internal Migration Checks

According to this story in La Polaka, the Mexican government has decommissioned the customs checkpoints on highways from the border to the interior of Mexico. The checkpoints have long been viewed by travelers as little more than another place to pay bribes.

So what does this mean? Will the border inspections now be more rigorous? Will local police in towns inside Mexico start checking for the tourist permisos that were always reviewed at the internal checkpoints, and then never inspected again? Will life on the border be forever, inextricably altered?

Stay tuned.
