Groundhog Day

Here’s the front page of the El Paso Times for the last couple of days. It’s like deja vu all over again.

The El Paso Times is following the lead of their parent newspaper USA Today, and printing big photos instead of news, and that might be okay in our pandemic restricted slow news days.

But, if that’s their tack, couldn’t they at least print a new photo every day?

  1. DebbieN recommended this book (even suggested that I set up a book reading group*). This IS a good book; make sure to get the 3rd edition: “The Elements of Journalism: What Newspeople Should Know and the Public Should Expect,” by Kovach and Rosensteil. It’s been updated to address the massive changes that have taken place in the last 20 years in news production, distribution, and public consumption.”

*I announced a reading group for BLM-cofounder Alicia Garza’s book, The Purpose of Power (2020): 35 people signed up, so it became complicated logistically to organize 3 zooms in reasonably sized groups.

  2. Many of their book reviews, travel notes, etc are also repeated and repeated. I guess they think we probably will just skim the paper and not notice….
