Garbage Revisited

Don’t you imagine that the City’s Environmental Services Department would love to get its hands on the local dumpster services?

The ESD is one of the few city departments that turns a profit. Check out your water bill. The ESD charges you for your trash bins. That’s what? About $30 a month, every month, for every house in El Paso. (And then there’s that other mysterious charge that Joe Pickett is suing about. Whatever happened to that?) That adds up pretty quick.

Don’t you think that the City’s garbage Czar could turn a profit from all the dumpsters around town?

At least then we’d have someone to bitch to when the dumpsters overflow. Landlords can ignore a bill from a private company, but the City has actual enforcement capability. I’m sure the City could figure a way to auction off a property for unpaid garbage fees, the way they sell properties for unpaid taxes.

Overflowing dumpsters isn’t an intractable problem without a solution. If the City wanted to remove that blight, the City could.
