El Paso: It’s Almost Good

According to this story in the El Paso Times, City Council will ask Joyce Wilson to stand out of the way when new City Manager Tommy Gonzalez takes over in a few weeks.

Peculiar, isn’t it?

Who better to show the new guy the ropes than an old hand? Or maybe City Council doesn’t want to taint the transition. Maybe they want to make sure we get a new start.

And then there’s the question of whether City Council appointing an interim City Manager is legal under the City Charter. Of course, legal’s not a big consideration in city government here. We tend to look at things like laws as suggestions instead of, like, laws.

I have a suspicion that all the secrecy over there at City Hall has to do with avoiding a lawsuit. If the citizens knew what was happening, the City might be on the hook for a sizable settlement. That’s why it always looks like Mayor Leeser is holding his breath. He stepped in a pile of shit on the way in, and he doesn’t want to scrape it off with the good silverware.

In the fullness of time, we may find out.
