The website fivethirtyeight.com claims that Delicious Mexican Eatery’s chile verde burrito is the second best burrito in American, being edged out by some place in San Francisco.
El Paso has its own style of Mexican cuisine, and in my opinion, El Paso style Mexican food is the standard by which all other Mexican food should be judged. So I’m wondering: Are the burritos at Delicious the best in El Paso?
You have places like Rafa’s, that serve only burritos, and those burritos are giant, sufficient for two or three meals. I figger those are the equivalent of a two-drink minimum. You’re not getting in and out without spending at least five bucks.
And the burritos at La Colonial typically sell out before noon, maybe because the flour tortillas at La Colonial are in a league of their own.
Burritos El Compa used to be great, over on Diezyseis, but I believe they’ve folded up their tent. The burrito stands over the canal by Mariscal are all gone, also, though I dimly recall Burritos Meny opening at another location. An additional feature of those burrito stands was that you could also buy cocaine there, rumor has it. Right now, my favorite place to buy a burrito in Juarez is at one of those Raramuri food stands by the cathedral.
But I digress. We were talking about the best burrito in El Paso. Any recommendations?
Laurita’s kitchen on Mesa in Segundo, across from Popo’s bar. Lengua en chipotle or Lengua a la Mexicana are my favorites. The also have buche.
Meny is open on the east side of Av. Juarez about two blocks south of the bridge. It’s okay but definitely competes on value more than overall quality. El Compa was still open as of a few months ago and still serving fantastic deshebrada a la mexicana. The place across the street from it, Centenario I think it’s called, is pretty good too. Other favorites: Los Robles, Sabino, Aquimichu.
Lucy’s machaca and queso.
“Alice The Burrito Lady” in Anthony and Canutillo. Delicious cannot even come close.
Always wanted to. Never been. Soon, now.
