How to Live in El Paso: Frutas Avenue Fraternal and Social Club

Okay, so maybe I’m late to the party on this one. Maybe you’ve already been there. Maybe you’re already tired of homestyle food and reasonable prices. Maybe you’re not into honoring our past through retro fashion.

But here’s the dope for the rest of you. The Frutas Avenue Fraternal and Social Club is tucked up against the railroad tracks behind the Good Luck Cafe (which deserves its own How to Live in El Paso).

The word on the street is that this place used to be the beer garden for the Mitchell, and later the Falstaff, brewery. Which is completely believable, because it’s still a beer garden. Okay, it only has three kinds of beer (Guinness, Dos Equis Lager, and Michelob Ultra), but you can probably mix them to get almost any kind of beer you want.

But the real reason to go to the FAFSC (sounds like a labor union when you write it like that) is the food. On Thursday the specials are meat loaf or bratwurst, for instance. And there are other sandwiches available every day.

The FAFSC Facebook page hasn’t been updated since November (I feel your pain, brother), but, based on my extensive independent research, I’ve discovered that the FAFSC is open from lunch till 9:30. There are meeting rooms, and a pool table, and if you go anywhere else, you’re wasting your time.

  1. Hello & good day,
I’m unable to reach the establishment by telephone number, it is not a working number. Have they since closed? Any information will be greatly appreciated.

    1. I don’t know. Their last Facebook post is more than a year old. I’ll go by and check it out.

      1. The door was locked this afternoon. I’m guessing they’re closed.

        Too bad.
