A BBC special from, I think, the the 80s called Century of the Self documents in detail the history of this manipulation science. Bernays was Freud’s nephew and published his work here in English. I’ve viewed this (Century) several times and it always fascinates me. The methods were used in the post-war era in consumer goods packaging, too.
