Ready One, nee the National Company for the Employment of the Disabled, the enterprise that former CEO Bob Jones drove to prison, got a $900 million contract that will require 500 new employees. They’re not the high paying jobs that local government has been pursuing, but it’s better than a stick in the eye.
And there’s this from the El Paso Inc.:
Cowork Oasis, which opened in Downtown in July, is off to an early start attracting startup companies to the El Paso region.
Two startups, one founded in Puerto Rico and another in Mexico City, will soon open offices at Cowork Oasis. Local venture capitalist and Cowork Oasis co-founder Beto Pallares said he learned about the startups while looking for investment opportunities in Puerto Rico.
Brands of Americas is a Puerto Rico-based e-commerce platform that helps entrepreneurs grow and market their products to global markets. And Yaydoo is a Mexico City-based office management platform that simplifies company expenses, automates procurement and manages vendors.
Of course El Paso should be looking to Latin America for new businesses. If we have a natural advantage in attracting businesses, it’s our Spanish speaking population and Mexican culture. El Paso should be the gateway to the U.S. for our southern neighbors.
But we can fix that if we try to imitate every other city in the U.S.
