More Debt Per Capita

According to the slideshow that accompanies this story from the Austin American Statesman, El Pasoans owe more General Obligation debt per capita than any other large city in Texas.

Each El Pasoan owes $2,708 dollars to the City’s General Fund. The people in Houston come in second place, and they owe $2,450 each.

Houston’s median household income is $63,802, and El Paso’s is $44,416.

That’s a lot of cheddar. The median household income in Houston is 44% greater than the median household income in El Paso, but we owe 11% more than the people of Houston. And Houston’s in second place.

In the race to fiscal insolvency, we are kicking ass.

That’s messed up.
