Kentucky Club Sanctioned for Discrimination Against Indigenous

Well, the Kentucky Club is in the news again, and not for anything good.

LaPolaka (Noticias en Caliente)* reports that the manager of the K Club denied entrance to a Raramuri woman because she was wearing huaraches, the typical footwear of the native Chihuahuan tribe.

The incident might have passed unnoticed except for two things: cellphones have video cameras built in these days, and the individual denied entrance was the Governor of the Raramuri.

The bar was “sanctioned” by the Profeco, the Legal Office for the Protection of the Consumer, and could be closed permanently, or at least until it pays large formal and less than formal fines, which may have already happened as of this writing.

Class and race discrimination is widespread in Mexico, and it’s encouraging to see official action discouraging it.
