In Defense of the Local Media

Hey, times are hard in the print industry. You can only tighten your belt so much before you have to start laying people off. And a business is like a family. You worry where those hack journalists you’ve grown to love are going to find another job, caught in the jaws of a heartless economy.

So you do what you have to do to forestall the inevitable, even if you don’t like doing it.

So when the El Paso Times runs an editorial advocating the immediate construction of the downtown arena, and the related rise in property taxes, they run it on a Saturday, when their circulation is the lowest.

And I imagine when David Crowder wrote this sentence about the ballpark in the El Paso Inc.

The awards were in recognition of their roles in bringing Triple-A baseball to a new Downtown ballpark that voters overwhelmingly approved in 2012, as well as quality of life bond propositions totaling $472 million.

it was the equivalent of that Viet Nam prisoner of war blinking out T-O-R-T-U-R-E in Morse code, letting us all know he was making his statements under duress.

We all do what we have to do, and I can’t be too critical of anyone that makes a tough decision.
