Circle the Wagons

Did I ever mention that the El Paso City Government, the Chamber of Commerce, and MountainStar Sports have declared war on El Paso’s working class and small businesses?

I think you can find it here.

And here.

And here.

If you have mad googling skills, I’m sure you can find some more posts on El Chuqueño that talk about the ongoing class war.

I mean the City keeps charging us more in taxes, and giving us less in services.

And it’s not happening by accident. It’s all part of the City’s Strategic Plan.

Well, here’s the latest salvo from the people to whom you are just collateral damage.

From the Chamber’s website:

EPC City of El Paso Strategy Forum March 30, 2022 5:30-7:30pm

EPC Forum is back! Stop by for an appetizer and a drink at Alamo Drafthouse Montecillo to hear from City Manager, Tommy Gonzalez, as he shares the City of El Paso’s 2022 Strategic Plan. A registration fee ($29 members/$39 non-members) is required for those looking to attend.

This event is hosted with assistance from Texas Gas Service.

Limited tickets are available, so don’t miss out. We look forward to seeing you there! Buy your tickets here!

Doesn’t that sound great? Only $30 ($40 for non-members) and you get to hear Tommy G talk about what a good job he’s doing.

The cover charge is just to keep out the riffraff. No one is really going to pay to hear the City Manager extol his virtues and talk about his management talent. The Chamber will give most of those tickets away to make sure there are warm bodies in the venue. And pretending to charge for the event creates perceived value.

(The text message promoting this event specifies that the drink will be “non-alcoholic”. Forty bucks and they won’t even buy you a beer. I bet the Alamo Drafthouse includes free fountain drinks with the rental.)

This whole event is a metaphor for the Strategic Plan. Charge the people for something they don’t want, and then tell them what a good deal they’re getting.

Rah Rah! Hurray!

The Chamber, and the City, and MountainStar Sports Group (you know they’re in there somewhere), are just having a pep rally because people are saying that they’ve declared war on El Paso’s working class and small businesses. The City Manager has to rally the troops to convince them that emperor is not really naked. Even though he’s naked.

Maybe you already heard that.
