lucy's coffee shop
Sunday mornings used to be prime time at the diner
Lucy’s Coffee Shop, that venerable institution that opened in 1974 in that old motor hotel near downtown, appears to have shuttered its glass doors.

Presumably it succumbed to the pressures of scale and economics. There were never more than a dozen stools in front of the worn linoleum. Competition is fierce in the local restaurant scene, and Lucy’s served a demographic that is moving on to Ensure and softer foods.

Still, Lucy’s was an institution. In the old days, Lucy herself drove the old metal spatulas. She told my younger self more than once that if I didn’t have money, I should come by and she’d carry me a tab.

You can still get your machaca fix at the King’s X, or a newer location further down Mesa. Still, it’s a sad day.

  1. The California/Mesa location is still open and is being run by David’s sister (I cannot remember her name) and will remain open.

    1. Well, you’re right there, Mr. Kramer, so I’m sure you’d know, but I haven’t seen it open lately. Does it keep unusual hours? Do I?

No doubt that is just another thing I’m wrong about. I guess this is like Tom and Huck’s funeral. Now we can all go eat the machaca (though personally I prefer the carne picada) to celebrate.

      Thanks for the correction.
